Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel, speaking at a news conference in Jerusalem, has firmly expressed his stance on the recent ceasefire agreement between the United States and Iran. Despite the deal, Netanyahu asserted that the conflict is far from over.
In his address, Netanyahu emphasized his refusal to comply with a critical demand from the Iran-U.S. negotiations: the withdrawal of Israeli forces from Lebanon. Israeli soldiers are currently engaged in battles with Hezbollah, a militant group that supports Iran.
In March, at the onset of the U.S.-Israeli war against Iran, Hezbollah launched attacks on Israel to express solidarity with Iran. This prompted Israeli troops to occupy what Netanyahu referred to as a ‘security zone’ in southern Lebanon. They have also targeted Hezbollah sites in and around Beirut, which led to Iranian retaliatory strikes against Israel.
The hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah over the past three months have resulted in over 3,700 Lebanese deaths and at least 30 Israeli casualties, as reported by authorities in both regions.
During the peace talks with the United States, Iran insisted on the withdrawal of Israeli forces from Lebanon. Notably, Israel was not included in these discussions. Separate negotiations between Israel and Lebanon took place in Washington, focusing on a potential peace agreement. However, this proposal depends on Hezbollah ceasing its attacks on Israel, a condition Hezbollah has dismissed since it is not part of those negotiations.
