Authorities in Brazil have charged three men with homicide following the death of a woman who fell more than 130 feet off a bridge in Limeira. The woman, Maria Eduarda Rodrigues de Freitas, was not properly secured to any safety equipment during a rope-jumping event. Luis Felipe Feliciano Egoroff, 32, Vitor de Freitas Goncalves, 27, and Maicon Fernandes Cintra, 42, were arrested and remain in custody. The charges allege they engaged in a dangerous act with fatal risk, despite not intending to kill.
Police reported that the men, who are rope-jumping instructors, admitted to not securing Eduarda properly. Videos online show her being lifted over the bridge by two men and dropped, with a third man watching. She wore a helmet, but no safety cord was visible. The site of the incident, known as Skeleton Bridge, once served as a railway line but has been out of use for years.
Rope jumping, the sport involved, uses climbing ropes for a pendulum effect, unlike bungee jumping, which uses elastic cords. Dan Osman, who pioneered rope jumping, died during a jump in 1998 when a cord snapped. Eduarda’s previous experience in the sport is unclear.
Tributes have been pouring in for Eduarda following her tragic death. A local gym, Panobianco Academia, praised her for her joy and dedication, acknowledging her positive impact on those around her. The gym closed its doors in her honor. Eduarda’s mother expressed her grief in a heartfelt social media post, cherishing the memories and the time they shared.
In response to the incident, Limeira’s city officials have announced plans to sue the federal government over ongoing safety concerns at Skeleton Bridge. Limeira Mayor Murilo Félix criticized the federal authorities for not addressing the safety issues, claiming the city has been trying to enforce local ordinances for over a year. The federal government has yet to comment.
Eduarda’s last social media post mirrored her adventurous spirit, reflecting on her decision to jump. Onlookers witnessed her holding a camera during the fatal fall.
