The Finnish women’s hockey team is grappling with a norovirus outbreak, leading to the postponement of the Thursday match initially set between Finland and Canada. A representative from the Finnish Ice Hockey Association communicated to The Associated Press that 13 athletes have either contracted the virus or have been placed under quarantine.
Speaking on the situation, Olympic officials stated, “While all stakeholders recognize the disappointment of not playing the game as originally scheduled, this was a responsible and necessary decision that reflects the spirit of the Olympic Games and the integrity of the competition.”
Norovirus is a highly contagious virus, often branded as the ‘stomach bug.’ It typically induces symptoms such as vomiting and diarrhea, which can result in dehydration. The virus is especially concerning for athletes due to the heightened possibility of transmission in close-contact environments like locker rooms.
According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, individuals affected by norovirus typically recover within a few days; however, they remain contagious for some time even after recovery.
The Finnish team initially detected signs of the outbreak on Tuesday night. By Thursday, after a practice session, only ten players were healthy enough to continue. Finnish coach Tero Lehterä shared with the AP, “Most of the sick players are improving but are not in a condition to compete. Moreover, participating in the game could pose health risks to Team Canada as well.”
Despite the setback, the Finnish players are endeavoring to maintain a positive outlook. Captain Jenni Hiirikoski commented, “It’s not nice, definitely. But we try to focus one day at a time. The big thing has been how we tolerate different things. I think we try to help each other, whatever it is, and how it goes. So it’s just stay calm and focused.”
Finland has traditionally fielded a strong women’s hockey team, having secured a bronze medal in the last two Winter Olympics. The match against Canada has been rescheduled for February 12 at the Milano Rho Ice Hockey Arena.
