Seoul, South Korea — North Korea initiated a short-range ballistic missile launch along with other weapons towards the sea on Tuesday. This act marks the latest in a series of weapons demonstrations from North Korea this year, according to South Korea’s military.
The missile was launched from Jongju, a city located near North Korea’s west coast. It traveled approximately 80 kilometers, or about 50 miles, South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff reported. The area in question, known as the Yellow Sea or West Sea, lies between the Korean peninsula and China.
In addition to the ballistic missile, North Korea launched other types of projectiles. Details on these were not provided. However, South Korea, in alliance with the U.S., is maintaining a state of readiness to counter any North Korean provocations. The Joint Chiefs of Staff mentioned enhanced surveillance measures have been implemented.

This event is North Korea’s first weapons launch since April 19, when it fired several short-range missiles. That launch was characterized by state media as a display of cluster bomb warheads.
Since the collapse of nuclear diplomacy with President Trump in 2019, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has prioritized expanding the nation’s nuclear and missile capabilities. Though Mr. Trump has expressed a willingness to resume discussions, North Korea has ignored these overtures, pushing Washington to abandon demands for nuclear disarmament as a prerequisite for talks.
Kim Jong Un has also taken a firm stance against South Korea, denouncing it as a persistent adversary and working to sever all ties.
On the same day, South Korean President Lee Jae Myung emphasized a need to enhance the country’s military, speaking at a Cabinet meeting. He highlighted the importance of artificial intelligence, drone technology, and the potential acquisition of a nuclear-powered submarine. These topics have been notable in his diplomatic discussions with the United States. Although Lee advocates for improving ties with North Korea, he underscored the need for South Korea to demonstrate its commitment to its own defense, which would also fortify its alliance with the U.S.
