North Korean Leader and Daughter Celebrate Korean War Anniversary

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un observed the 73rd anniversary of the Korean War armistice by visiting war memorials. Accompanied by his daughter Kim Ju Ae and wife Ri Sol Ju, he honored the fallen at the Fatherland Liberation War Martyrs Cemetery in Pyongyang. This marked the first time Kim’s daughter joined the commemorations, signaling her growing public visibility.

State media, KCNA, reported that Kim Jong Un visited the graves of first-generation guerrilla fighters. He laid flowers and met with veterans, reaffirming North Korea’s narrative of a “great victory” in the 1950-1953 conflict. The war concluded with an armistice instead of a peace treaty.

Photographs and videos distributed by North Korean state media highlighted Ju Ae walking beside her father during the official ceremonies. She greeted elderly veterans alongside Kim Jong Un, demonstrating her increasing public role.

According to South Korea’s Unification Ministry, this event marked Ju Ae’s inaugural attendance at these particular commemorations, including her first visits to both the Fatherland Liberation War Martyrs Cemetery and the Revolutionary Martyrs Cemetery.

South Korea’s National Intelligence Service (NIS) has indicated that there is “credible intelligence” of Ju Ae being positioned as Kim’s potential successor. This assessment follows her periodic appearances in state media alongside her father. In March, images captured her operating a new tank and participating in firearms training.

Kim Jong Un also extended his respects to the Chinese volunteer soldiers by visiting their cemetery and honoring Mao Anying, son of Mao Zedong. This gesture highlights an improvement in relations with Beijing.
