Supporters of Henry Ruggs III, a former NFL player, argued for his parole by emphasizing his remorse and personal growth since a 2021 car crash that resulted in a woman’s death. Despite these claims, the Nevada Board of Parole Commissioners declined the request for parole. Ruggs will remain incarcerated until at least 2027, which is the date set for his mandatory parole release.
The Incident and Aftermath
In 2021, Ruggs drove at extreme speeds of up to 156 mph, crashing into a vehicle driven by Tina Tintor, resulting in her death and the death of her dog, Max. Ruggs, a Las Vegas Raiders first-round draft pick in 2020, was found to have a blood alcohol level of 0.16, twice the legal limit, according to a test taken shortly after the crash. Prosecutors stated Ruggs had spent the evening at a Las Vegas venue known as Topgolf.
Legal Proceedings
Ruggs pleaded guilty in May 2023 to felony DUI causing death and misdemeanor vehicular manslaughter. He received a prison sentence ranging from three to ten years in August 2023, ending his NFL career. However, there are indications Ruggs might consider returning to football upon his release. If paroled in 2027, he would be 28 years old, potentially allowing a second chance in the league.
Rehabilitation Efforts
Ruggs has worked towards rehabilitation by completing his bachelor’s degree from the University of Alabama and participating in various prison work programs. He even worked at the Nevada governor’s mansion as part of an inmate program. Despite these steps and his expression of remorse, the parole board remains unconvinced.
The Associated Press noted Ruggs will have another opportunity for parole review three months before his release in August 2027, as stated by Kathi Baker, executive director of the Nevada Board of Parole Commissioners.
