The Pittsburgh Steelers have appointed a new head coach for the first time since 2007. This offseason, they selected Mike McCarthy, and team legend Jerome Bettis expressed enthusiasm about the decision.
Mike Tomlin’s Departure
Mike Tomlin stepped down after 19 years as the Steelers’ head coach. His time with the team included winning a Super Bowl and ensuring no losing seasons. Bettis acknowledged Tomlin’s significant contributions, noting the difficulty of following a coach with such an impressive record.
“I’m excited for what McCarthy brings. He’s a fundamentals-type coach and a championship-caliber leader,” Bettis commented during an interview with Fox News Digital.
McCarthy’s Return
McCarthy led the Green Bay Packers to a Super Bowl victory against the Steelers in 2011, with Aaron Rodgers as quarterback. Now, he returns, taking on the role of head coach for Pittsburgh, with Rodgers once again playing under him.
Bettis shared his excitement about McCarthy’s new role. “We’re thrilled about the leadership he’ll bring. There’s a lot of excitement for what he’ll contribute,” he said.
Reflecting on Tomlin’s Legacy
Bettis described Tomlin’s tenure as remarkable. He expected Tomlin might step down due to the long duration of his service. “I was surprised but also recognized the potential for change after nearly two decades,” Bettis admitted. Tomlin’s run was commendable, and Bettis expressed gratitude for Tomlin’s impact on the organization.
Jerome Bettis, known as “The Bus,” is one of the Steelers’ most celebrated running backs. He remains in the Pro Football Hall of Fame and maintained a touchdown-heavy career with 13,662 rushing yards and 91 touchdowns. Bettis played a pivotal role in the Steelers’ Super Bowl XL win against the Seattle Seahawks.
Currently, Bettis is preparing for the American Century Tournament from July 10-12 at Edgewood Golf Course in Lake Tahoe. The event will be accessible via broadcast on NBC and Peacock.
