Punch the Monkey Celebrates His First Birthday with Fans Worldwide

Punch, an orphaned monkey at the Ichikawa City Zoological and Botanical Garden in Japan, recently turned one year old. Known for clinging to an orangutan plushie as a baby, Punch has received a flood of well-wishing messages from fans around the globe as he celebrates this milestone.

After being abandoned by his mother due to exhaustion, Punch relied on the care of zookeepers and his toy for comfort and to develop his gripping ability. This was crucial for his survival as a newborn macaque. Now, Punch has adjusted to life without the plushie and interacts with other monkeys at the zoo, making it difficult to distinguish him from the group.

Punch continues to attract large crowds, having received approximately 2,500 birthday cards from around the world. Takashi Yasunaga, the head of the zoo, shared that many messages are displayed in an indoor birthday exhibit for Punch, accompanied by a video showing highlights of his early life.

“As Punch was trying very hard struggling to live each day, his two keepers did everything they can while other staff watched over him,” said Yasunaga, reflecting on the past year. “It was extremely hot when Punch was born. The memory is still clear to me as the hot season returns.”

In January, after six months of dedicated care, Punch joined the monkey enclosure with about 50 other monkeys. This presented a challenge that eventually led to his popularity. In February, social media images of Punch and his plushie caught widespread attention. Tens of thousands of visitors, including many from overseas, came to the zoo in response.

One significant online moment was when other monkeys rejected Punch, prompting him to seek comfort with the toy orangutan. His persistence and struggle resonated with fans, who encouraged him through #HangInTherePunch on social media.

Kumi Ishizawa, a visitor from Kobe, discovered Punch on social media earlier this year. Meeting him became a motivational goal during her recovery from illness. “He moved me … I kept on telling myself that I’m going to get well and come visit to see Punch,” said Ishizawa, expressing her happiness at finally seeing him in person.

Yeye Lights, a local resident, became a fan after her daughter in the Philippines told her about Punch. Now a regular zoo visitor, she celebrated Punch’s birthday with a cake. Expressing gratitude, Lights said, “I have a cake for Punch-kun, I’m celebrating with my friends,” and thanked the zookeepers for their care and dedication.
