Record Economic Losses from Wildfires in 2025

5 days ago 0

In 2025, wildfires caused unparalleled economic damage, primarily due to severe incidents in densely populated areas such as Los Angeles. Despite the relatively small total burned area, the financial impact reached record heights.

According to a recent analysis, wildfires in Los Angeles and significant blazes in South Korea and Spain led to a minimum of $54 billion in worldwide losses. This marked the highest recorded level of insured losses. The figure does not account for indirect losses such as lost workdays, business closures, or increased burdens on healthcare systems. These estimates are conservative, as insurers often withhold proprietary data, and assessing damage in certain countries is challenging.

When considering indirect losses, fires in the Los Angeles area alone contributed an additional $100 billion to the total. These fires covered at least 90 square miles, resulting in at least 31 fatalities and displacing over 150,000 residents. Experts suggest that hundreds more may have died from indirect causes like smoke inhalation.

Researchers used data from the EM-DAT database, which compiles information on disasters and their societal and environmental costs globally. While the database does not present a complete picture, it offers a minimum estimate of the damage from fires, floods, and other disasters. This information is crucial for researchers and policymakers.
