Russian Comedian Sentenced Over War Joke Amid Crackdown

4 months ago 0

A Russian stand-up comedian has been sentenced to nearly six years in a penal colony for making a joke about a war veteran, marking another instance in the ongoing suppression of dissent against the war in Ukraine. The comedian, Artemy Ostanin, based in Moscow, was convicted following a 2025 performance where he recounted an encounter with a disabled ex-soldier on the metro, humorously referring to him as a ‘legless skater’.

The joke, which made waves online due to pro-Kremlin figures and media outlets sharing the clip, led to calls for Ostanin’s punishment for allegedly insulting soldiers injured in the Ukraine conflict. Besides this charge, a Moscow court found him guilty of inciting hatred and insulting religious sentiments for another joke about religion.

‘The final sentence for Ostanin is imprisonment for five years and nine months in a general regime penal colony,’ stated judge Olesya Mendeleyeva, as reported by Russian state news agency RIA Novosti.

Ostanin, 29, contested the accusation, stating that the joke did not reference veterans of the ‘special military operation’—the Russian government’s term for the war in Ukraine. In his final court statement, reported by Russia’s independent SOTA media outlet, Ostanin expressed hope that no one would endure similar legal mistreatment.

The judge responsible for the sentencing had previously been sanctioned by the United States Treasury. The 2024 sanctions pertained to what the department described as the ‘arbitrary detention’ of Moscow city councilor Alexei Gorinov, who had objected to the war in Ukraine.

Following his arrest, Ostanin was listed among Moscow’s ‘terrorists and extremists’, a label commonly applied by Russia to suppress dissent and opposition. Since beginning its offensive in Ukraine in 2022, Russia has significantly intensified efforts to silence critics.

Instances over the past few years highlight this crackdown. In November, an 18-year-old street musician named Diana Loginova was jailed for a third time for anti-war performances. In 2024, a doctor faced imprisonment for allegedly criticizing the war during a consultation. The artist Sasha Skochilenko received a seven-year sentence for swapping price tags with anti-war messages in 2023. Additionally, opposition journalist Vladimir Kara-Murza was sentenced to 25 years in a maximum-security prison that same year, convicted of treason for speaking against Russia’s war efforts.
