The San Francisco Giants are facing ongoing criticism following their recent ‘Pride Night’ event at Oracle Park. During the game against the Chicago Cubs, scheduled to honor LGBTQ+ Pride, players received special Pride caps. However, pitcher Sam Hentges did not wear the cap, and three other pitchers, including Landen Roupp and JT Brubaker, chose to inscribe Bible verses on their caps.
Landen Roupp pitched during the game, raising questions among fans about their support for certain players. Arne Johnson, a Giants enthusiast and parent of two LGBTQ children, expressed frustration. He shared that the actions of the pitchers were hurtful, questioning the welcoming environment at such events. Johnson, associated with Rainbow Families Action, emphasized the impact on his family.
Johnson stated, ‘One night a year, we asked for the players to cheer for our children, and they couldn’t even manage that. To me, that is deeply offensive, and it’s something that nobody in the Bay Area should tolerate.’
The Giants issued a statement acknowledging the pain caused by some players’ choices. They reaffirmed their commitment to inclusion and a welcoming environment for everyone:
‘We understand that the choices by individual players have caused pain and anger to many in the LGBTQ+ community and we are sorry for that. Those choices do not change our organization’s commitment to inclusion, belonging, and creating a welcoming environment for all.’
Rainbow Families Action expressed disappointment with the Giants’ statement, encouraging fans to support organizations where LGBTQ fans receive universal support. While no official boycott is in place, Johnson suggested one could arise if the Giants don’t take corrective measures. He called for meetings with LGBTQ families and substantial educational efforts for the players.
Nexstar’s KRON reached out to Major League Baseball regarding the issue of inscriptions on hats, a violation of league rules, but no response was received before publication.
