Scottie Scheffler’s Struggle at the Memorial Tournament

22 hours ago 0

Scottie Scheffler, recognized as the top golfer globally, is on the path to achieving all-time greatness. Yet even elite athletes face challenging days. Thursday was such a day for Scheffler.

Scheffler’s 2026 season, while not catastrophic, hasn’t matched the excellence of his 2024 and 2025 performances. In 2024, he secured victories at The Players, The Masters, the Memorial Tournament, the Tour Championship, and added an Olympic gold to his accolades. In 2025, he triumphed at the PGA Championship at Quail Hollow and The Open Championship at Royal Portrush.

This year, Scheffler’s first triumph came at The American Express in Palm Springs. However, since that initial win, his performances have fluctuated, resulting in frequent top-5 finishes and close calls. He placed third at the WM Phoenix Open, fourth at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, and secured a solo second at The Masters with impressive weekend rounds of 65 and 68. He lost in a playoff at the RBC Heritage and finished second at the Cadillac Championship. Although positioned to defend his PGA Championship title, rounds of 71 on Friday and Saturday thwarted his efforts. He concluded with a third-place finish at The CJ Cup Byron Nelson.

This week, the Memorial Tournament at Muirfield Village Golf Club presents Scheffler with another challenge. The course is famed for its difficulty, which often helps top players like him stand out. Scheffler previously won this tournament consecutively and finished third in both 2023 and 2021.

On Thursday, his opening round began well, completing the front nine at -2. However, the back nine proved difficult, particularly at the par 3 16th hole. He bogeyed holes 10 and 14, bringing his score back to even par. On the 16th, a challenging pin position led to his tee shot falling short and landing in the water, resulting in a double bogey.

Scheffler’s frustration was evident in his interaction with caddie Ted Scott. Following the incident, he was overheard expressing confusion and disappointment over the situation, notably regarding the unexpected wind conditions that influenced the outcome.

After the round, Scheffler shared his perspective with reporters, explaining the wind’s unexpected shift from down off the right, affecting his well-placed iron shot. He emphasized the challenge of making good shots only to face unfortunate outcomes due to such factors.

Despite the setback, Scheffler managed to birdie the par 4 17th, concluding the day with a +1 score, six shots behind the leaders. Such moments underscore that even the best players can feel the frustrations inherent in golf.
