While inspecting a property, Ryan Edmiston, a Portland, Oregon-based property inspector, uncovered a hidden room, significantly altering the perception of the house. Edmiston is known for his meticulous approach, and this discovery amplified his reputation. He unearthed an entire room that no one previously knew about.

He shared with Newsweek, “This isn’t the first time I’ve found hidden spaces, but this was the best-preserved time capsule I’ve encountered in my decade of inspecting.” According to Edmiston, the house was old and had undergone multiple extensions, resulting in several attic spaces. “I knew there was an attic over the garage,” he noted, “but the access was just a small panel in the garage ceiling. Upon inspecting it, I found a staircase leading to a concealed door.”

Edmiston described the space’s condition, mentioning a foul smell of stale air mixed with signs of rodents. Nevertheless, he found the room to be a fascinating area untouched for years. Surprisingly, the current homeowner, having lived there for five years, was entirely unaware of this hidden space.

On his Instagram account, @portlandpropertyinspectors, Edmiston showcased a video of his discovery. The room revealed a fully furnished office complete with a chair, lighting, and multiple desks. A ladder also indicated an alternative access point concealed behind a drawer that swung open.

Edmiston opted to inform the prospective buyers about the hidden room only after concluding his inspection. He recounted their reactions as “very entertaining,” stating that he led them to the discovery in the bedroom, drawing the wife’s attention to a bookcase with his flashlight. Her initial apprehension transformed into excitement upon discovering the secret space.

Property inspectors play a crucial role in the home-buying process. Their work enables buyers to detect hidden defects and gauge significant systems and structures before purchasing, thereby mitigating potential costly surprises post-purchase, as emphasized by Progressive.

Edmiston has garnered a local following interested in Portland’s hidden rooms.
