The recent article on May 26 titled “Trump’s health drawing scrutiny” highlights a systemic issue beyond any individual president or political party. This issue concerns the transparency and credibility of presidential health assessments. Having concluded a career of over 25 years in the Navy Medical Corps, including a position as attending physician to Congress at the U.S. Capitol, I hold military medicine in high regard.
However, the current system where active-duty officers, within the president’s chain of command, publicly evaluate the president’s health raises concerns about transparency. In contexts where public trust is crucial, relying solely on internal audits is unacceptable. The same standard should apply to presidential health assessments.
This concern is not limited to partisan politics or personalities. It is about the integrity of the process and the necessity for truly independent evaluations when it comes to the health and fitness of the nation’s leaders.
