Shania Twain has shared her experiences of extreme dieting and exercise in her quest to remain thin. This took a toll on her health, leading to malnourishment. During a discussion on aging and body image, Twain illuminated how her ongoing pursuit of thinness resulted in detrimental habits. She told The Times, “I was malnourished,” attributing it to her efforts “to be thinner.” In 2019, changes she couldn’t control due to menopause prompted Twain to reevaluate her relationship with her body.
Menopause and Body Image
Menopause affected Twain’s body in ways she found difficult to manage. At 60 years old, Twain remarked, “So all of a sudden I’m bloating, and I’m definitely not in control. I can’t just lose five pounds.” This led to diminished self-esteem, where she found herself avoiding mirrors. “I stopped looking at myself in the mirror,” she recounted. “I hated my body.” Her approach involved strict exercise regimens combined with eliminating sugars and fats, which proved unhealthy. “I was doing very unhealthy things,” she admitted.
Self-Acceptance and Embracing Change
The period following menopause has taught Twain crucial lessons in self-acceptance. She now views mirrors positively and accepts bodily changes. Twain stated, “Menopause has been very good for me because I’ve learned that some things you cannot control.” With roots in country music, Twain gained international fame with her 1995 album “The Woman in Me.” Reflecting on her career, she shared past insecurities that persisted since youth, stating that she felt discomfort with her body from age 10.
Career and Influence
Despite personal challenges, Twain has continued to inspire in country and pop music. Known as the “Queen of Country Pop,” she has sold over 100 million records globally. Her rise has paved the path for other crossover artists. Twain expressed a persistent desire to explore new ventures. “I’m not slowing down,” she declared. “I just keep finding new things that I love to do.” Her spirit remains active and adventurous, with interests that include discovering new recipes and exploring the natural world.
