South Elgin’s Rising Star: Jonathan Niksich

Junior right-hander Jonathan Niksich had a challenging start to his season with South Elgin. Gaining more opportunities, he initially struggled. His turning point came with a new mindset. “The beginning was a struggle and I decided to stop thinking,” Niksich explained. “Just play the game.” This shift helped him become a crucial asset for the Storm.

Niksich’s skills were essential Wednesday against long-time rival Bartlett. The game, part of the Upstate Eight Conference, held the championship title in balance. After a grueling match, play stopped after 14 innings due to darkness with a tie score of 0-0.

Pitching Showdown: Niksich Steps Up

Starting pitcher Zacharia Barkho delivered an outstanding performance with eight innings, striking out 13 batters, and allowing just two hits and a walk. With Barkho reaching his pitch limit, Niksich stepped in, delivering six innings of relief. He struck out 11 while conceding only two hits and two walks. His contribution was vital in maintaining the scoreline for South Elgin, who stood at 23-9 overall and 15-3 in the conference.

Jonathan Niksich showed his determination. He said, “Based on how [Barkho] performed, I knew I was going to do the same. He passed the energy back down to me. I had the confidence and the energy. It was the best game I’ve played.”

Bartlett’s Strong Pitching Response

Bartlett, holding a record of 22-10 and 15-3 in the conference, matched South Elgin’s strength. Their pitchers Brandon Pelz, Aiden Mertes, and Joe Kennedy combined for 14 shutout innings. They struck out 12 opposing players while scattering five hits and three walks. Offensively, Josh Colaizzi and Mason Leiterman each contributed with a single and a double.

Coach Alex Coan expressed his trust in Pelz: “He is our guy. We count on him in big moments like that. Two of the best pitchers in our conference… It was a dogfight.”

South Elgin coach David Palmer commended Niksich’s performance. “Johnny was unbelievable,” he remarked. “He wants that ball and he wants that moment. You can see him progressively keep that adrenaline going.” Palmer also highlighted the competitive spirit between Barkho and Pelz.

Barkho enjoyed the contest, saying, “I love playing Bartlett. Every time I looked at him, even when I was in the box, I was smiling…it was a back-and-forth game.”

Niksich felt prepared when called upon. “I practiced for this,” he said. “I was ready for this moment.” Palmer reflected on Niksich’s growth, noting how the season had prepared him for this memorable encounter. “He wants to work quick. He dominates. He trusts himself.”
