South Korea’s Former President Yoon Suk Yeol Convicted Over Military Drone Operation

2 days ago 0

Former President Yoon Suk Yeol of South Korea has been convicted for his role in a military drone operation aimed at escalating tensions with North Korea. The court sentenced him to 30 years in prison, marking a significant legal outcome in South Korean history.

Yoon, who was impeached and removed from office in 2024, faced multiple criminal charges stemming from his authoritarian actions during his presidency. His impeachment led to a series of trials where he was charged with illegally imposing martial law. Earlier this year, he received a life sentence for masterminding an insurrection.

The conviction related to the military drone operation came as a major development. The Seoul Central District Court found Yoon and his collaborators responsible for sending drones across the heavily fortified inter-Korean border in late 2024. The operation was seen as an attempt to increase military tensions and justify martial law.

The special prosecutor argued that Yoon’s actions constituted “an anti-state and anti-national crime.” Alongside Yoon, two of his co-conspirators were also convicted. Kim Yong-hyun, the former defense minister, received a 30-year prison term, while Lt. Gen. Yeo In-hyong, his former counterintelligence commander, was sentenced to 15 years.

Yoon’s case has highlighted the severe consequences of efforts to undermine South Korea’s military integrity for political gain. This conviction serves as a warning against using military operations for personal and political purposes.
