Spencer Pratt recently appeared on “Fox & Friends” to discuss his campaign for the mayoral seat in Los Angeles. The former reality TV star is using what some call “intense social media tactics” to gain attention and get past competitors like incumbent Karen Bass and council member Nithya Raman.
Pratt’s strategy centers on internet popularity. He shared AI-generated videos featuring him in scenarios such as lightsaber battles and saves as a fictional superhero. His approach includes criticizing the current leadership and amplifying these messages through social media clips.
At 42, the ex-villain from “The Hills” wants to remake politics in a style akin to internet forums aligned with supporters of Donald Trump.
Pratt’s campaign faces difficulty. He must secure over 50% of the vote in Los Angeles’ nonpartisan “jungle primary” on June 2 to avoid a runoff in November. Currently, polls indicate Pratt is tied with Raman, while Bass holds a comfortable lead.
His campaign rhetoric on platforms like TikTok includes accusatory claims against Bass regarding the handling of local wildfires and the city’s homelessness crisis. Dan Cassino, a professor of government, notes Pratt’s focus on appealing to young men, similarly to Trump’s tactics in previous campaigns. Pratt’s endorsement from Joe Rogan further points to his success among online male influencer communities.
Former LA Councilmember Mike Bonin observes Pratt’s campaign as a mix of serious contender and social media spectacle. Pratt’s wide social media following has been a boon in disseminating his messages, aided by Elon Musk’s interactions on X and favorable coverage from influential conservative voices.
Bonin remarks that while a digital presence might not equate to an election win, it can lend significant support. He points out differences between Pratt’s campaign and others, noting his leveraging of a robust right-wing online media network.
Raman criticizes Pratt’s reliance on AI-generated content, contrasting his methods with her team’s commitment to traditional filmmaking. She claims Pratt’s alignment with emerging technology undermines real jobs in Los Angeles.
Professor Cassino suggests that ignoring Pratt’s tactics could be politically wise for his rivals. Despite praise as an “anti-woke” candidate, Pratt’s provocative language continues to polarize opinions online. Steve Bannon notes that Pratt’s dramatic approach represents a new template for right-wing candidates.
Bannon also cautions about Pratt’s use of AI-generated content, speculating potential voter fatigue and backlash. Despite Trump signaling support, Pratt has cautiously distanced himself from overt association with the MAGA movement given Los Angeles’ overwhelming Democrat voter base.
Pratt aims to maintain a nonpartisan stance, carefully navigating associations as he seeks the mayoral seat.
