A stabbing occurred in the heart of downtown Nantucket on Tuesday morning, near the busy area around the ferry docks. These docks bring a significant number of summer tourists to this affluent island in Massachusetts.
According to Nantucket police, officers were dispatched at 10:23 a.m. to South Beach Street, located between Broad Street and Oak Street, after reports of a stabbing. This location is known for its bustling commercial activity, particularly near the Steamship Authority ferry terminal.
The individual who sustained injuries received initial medical care at the scene and was quickly transported by the Nantucket Fire Department to Nantucket Cottage Hospital for further treatment.
“Over recent years, there have been concerns regarding the lack of police investigations into crimes against Black or immigrant residents in Nantucket. Residents have expressed the need for answers and are calling for justice.”
The stabbing occurred in one of the island’s busiest spots. Witnesses reported to the Nantucket Current that the incident followed a confrontation between the drivers of a Myles Reis garbage truck and a Sayles Seafood delivery truck, both parked in the area.
After the stabbing, the injured party moved towards “The Strip,” where employees from places like Stubby’s and nearby establishments attempted to stop the bleeding with available napkins until emergency responders arrived.
Authorities detained a second individual at the scene related to the incident. The suspect’s identity had not been disclosed by Tuesday evening, but an arraignment was scheduled for Wednesday morning in Nantucket District Court.
Police indicated that the investigation is ongoing and no further information would be shared at this time. The Massachusetts State Police directed all inquiries to the Nantucket Police Department.
This alleged attack happened as Nantucket experiences its peak summer period, drawing tourists, seasonal workers, and affluent homeowners to the typically quiet island.
