The Taiwanese government has issued a cautionary message to the United States regarding China’s intentions in the region. This comes as former President Donald Trump considers a substantial $14 billion arms deal for Taiwan. Taiwan’s prominent diplomat, Alexander Yui, has highlighted Taiwan’s crucial role as a defensive barrier against China’s expansive goals. The country’s semiconductor industry, responsible for 90% of the world’s advanced chips, underscores the importance of US support.
Recent intelligence from Taiwan indicates that China has mobilized over 100 ships near Taiwan in the days following Trump’s meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing. This information was revealed by Joseph Wu, Secretary General of Taiwan’s National Security Council, who shared detailed imagery of these deployments in strategic waters like the South China Sea and the East China Sea.
“In this part of the world, China is the one & only problem wrecking the status quo and threatening regional peace & stability,” Wu stated.
The revelation of China’s maritime activities comes in the wake of a temporary suspension of US arms shipments to Taiwan. Acting US Navy Secretary Hung Cao announced this suspension during a Senate Appropriations Defense Subcommittee hearing, explaining the need to prioritize munitions for the Epic Fury operation. Despite the $14 billion arms package approved by US lawmakers in January, Trump has not yet authorized the deal.
The pause in arms shipments has caught Taiwan off guard. Officials claim they were not informed of this decision, which follows a summit where the Taiwan issue was discussed as a critical point in China-US relations. Mao Ning, a spokesperson for the Chinese Foreign Ministry, emphasized the significance of the Taiwan question during the Trump-Xi meeting.
“If it is handled properly, the bilateral relationship will enjoy overall stability. Otherwise, the two countries will have clashes and even conflicts, putting the entire relationship in great jeopardy,” Ning warned.
Reports and comments surrounding these developments have prompted responses from the White House, Taiwanese representatives, and the Chinese Foreign Ministry as the situation continues to unfold.
