Taiwan Emphasizes U.S. Arms Sales as Key to Regional Stability

2 weeks ago 0

Taiwan’s president highlighted the significance of arms purchases from the United States as a primary deterrent against regional conflict. This statement came after former President Donald Trump questioned ongoing U.S. support for Taiwan following a visit to China.

President Lai Ching-te stated that U.S. arms sales and security cooperation with Taiwan not only follow legal obligations but also promote regional peace. “We thank President Trump for his continued support for peace across the Taiwan Strait, which includes increased arms sales to Taiwan,” Lai noted.

Trump, in a recent Fox News interview, hinted at reconsidering a proposed $14 billion arms package to Taiwan, contingent on China. He described the deal as a potential “negotiating chip.” This stance sparked concerns in Taiwan, but officials reiterated that U.S. policy on Taiwan remains steady. “Taiwan will maintain its sovereignty and democratic lifestyle despite pressure,” Lai affirmed, pointing to China as disrupting regional peace.

U.S. House Speaker Mike Johnson supported Lai’s remarks, emphasizing that “China cannot simply seize land,” reassuring strong Congressional support for Taiwan. Also, U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer noted on ABC that Trump is evaluating the arms sales, considering America’s security needs foremost.

China has labeled Taiwan as crucial in China-U.S. relations, with President Xi Jinping warning of potential conflicts if mishandled. Since 1949, China and Taiwan have operated as separate entities after a civil war in China.
