In recent developments, Taiwan has reiterated the strength of its relationship with the United States, which remains steadfast despite recent tensions with China. Taiwan’s President, Lai Ching-te, emphasized on Thursday that the nation’s ties with the US are unwavering. This assurance comes after Chinese President Xi Jinping reiterated China’s territorial claims over Taiwan in a conversation with US President Donald Trump.
During this wide-ranging call, President Xi addressed the US’s arms sales to Taiwan, indicating that this issue could reemerge as a significant point of contention in US-China relations. Historically, most countries, including the United States, do not maintain formal diplomatic ties with Taiwan due to China’s insistence on the ‘One China’ policy. Despite this, the US serves as Taiwan’s foremost international ally and is mandated by law to provide the island nation with defensive weapons.
President Lai Ching-te reaffirmed Taiwan’s confidence in its partnership with the United States, stating, “Taiwan–US relations are rock-solid, and our various cooperation projects will continue without change.” He highlighted that the US’s commitments to Taiwan remain intact.
“There’s going to be more language and rhetoric on Taiwan coming from both the US and China,” predicted Lev Nachman, a political science professor at National Taiwan University. He noted that Taiwan should prepare for increased focus on its status in discussions, referencing Trump’s expected visit to China in coming months.
In response to recent $11.1 billion US arms sales to Taiwan, which China opposes, President Xi urged the United States to exercise “prudence” in its dealings. According to a Chinese government statement, Xi stressed that Taiwan is the most critical issue in US-China relations and that Taiwan should not become independent.
President Trump described his call with Xi as “excellent,” reporting that they engaged in extensive discussions on a variety of topics, including trade, Taiwan, and international conflicts. “The relationship with China, and my personal relationship with President Xi, is an extremely good one,” Trump shared, emphasizing the importance of maintaining positive bilateral relations.
Despite potential shifts in US-China dynamics, experts like Lev Nachman advise against alarmism, particularly given Taiwan’s pivotal role in the global semiconductor industry. “I think Trump is keenly aware of how important Taiwan is to the United States’ current economic growth,” Nachman pointed out, suggesting that economic interests will likely prevent drastic changes in US-Taiwan relations.
Furthermore, Nachman highlighted the constructive nature of ongoing dialogue between Trump and Xi regarding Taiwan. “Open communication should hopefully minimize misunderstandings… that happen from a lack of speaking to each other,” he commented, drawing attention to the diplomatic avenues necessary to navigate complex international issues.
