Teen Athlete Convicted of Murder at Texas Track Event

2 hours ago 0

Newly released video footage from a police officer’s body camera, along with a surveillance camera at a Texas running track, reveals the aftermath of a tragic incident during a high school meet last year. The video documents the moments following a fatal stabbing involving two teenage athletes.

Karmelo Anthony, aged 19, was convicted of the murder of Austin Metcalf, aged 17, on June 10 and received a 35-year prison sentence. Anthony’s self-defense claims were dismissed by the jury. This footage was part of the evidence disclosed by the Collin County court after the trial concluded.

The surveillance video shows the stadium bleachers and track on a rainy day. A figure in a gray sweatshirt suddenly appears, running down the steps from behind a yellow tent. The silent video captures the figure reaching the bottom of the bleachers, stumbling, and then continuing to run alongside the fence separating the bleachers from the track. After briefly looking back, possibly at someone chasing him, he continues running.

The individual is later joined by another person, and they stop to converse and hug. A third person approaches and joins the conversation. Anthony then moves toward the fence where he encounters a police officer. He complies with the officer’s instructions and is handcuffed before being led to the police car.

As Anthony is escorted to the cruiser, he begins to cry. In a broken voice, he says, “He put his hands on me. I told him not to. He put his hands on me.” The officers guide him into the police vehicle and secure him inside.
