A 17-year-old from Virginia, Smit Kothari, launched Grocery Genius, an AI-driven website aimed at reducing food waste and addressing hunger. The platform provides custom recipes using pantry ingredients, tracks food inventory, and offers nutritional facts and health grades. Kothari plans to improve the app with user feedback while attending college.
The innovative website was inspired by Kothari’s observation of his family’s struggle with using random ingredients. Further research revealed many households face similar challenges. Grocery Genius helps users save money and prevents food expiration.
The site allows users to log the food they have at home. The AI generates three recipe suggestions, nutritional information, and money-saving advice. Features include meal planning and nutrient tracking, covering calories and macros. The app adapts to dietary restrictions and cooking skills.
A standout feature, the “Smart Pantry”, lets users track their food items and alerts them to approaching expiration dates for using or donating food. Kothari identified the connection between food waste and hunger, noting food often expires while others go hungry.
A visit to Africa, where he witnessed struggling families, motivated Kothari to create this tool. In Virginia, Kothari shared with WVEC the direct impact he saw, solidifying his commitment to solving these issues.
Grocery Genius claims to be “your kitchen’s smartest assistant”, offering comprehensive cooking support. The tool is free, requiring only an email for access. Christopher Tan of the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia and the Eastern Shore supported Kothari during development, appreciating its potential to help families and donors alike.
The app’s utility includes reminding users about forgotten pantry items, encouraging food use or donations before waste occurs. Grocery Genius won second in the Congressional App Challenge, promoting coding skills among students.
Kothari, a senior at Ocean Lakes High School, intends to enhance the app further as he transitions to college. He aims to continue developing Grocery Genius with input from its growing user base.
