The Obama Presidential Center Opens in Chicago with Personal Appearances

2 hours ago 0

Former President Barack Obama and former First Lady Michelle Obama made a surprise visit to the opening of the Obama Presidential Center in Chicago. On Friday, they greeted the first 100 visitors and were accompanied by LeVar Burton, former host of ‘Reading Rainbow’. Together, they read ‘Where the Wild Things Are’ to 25 school children at the Chicago Public Library branch located within the center.

During the reading, a light-hearted moment occurred when Michelle Obama added to her husband’s reading, bringing a round of applause from those gathered. Visitors had the opportunity to shake hands with the Obamas beneath a vibrant 38-foot painting of Chicago inspired by Carl Sandburg’s poem “City of the Big Shoulders.”

One visitor, 18-year-old Houefa Agassounon from Chicago, expressed her excitement about the unexpected encounter, noting the moment as one of the highlights of her life. She had previously written to the Obama Foundation expressing her wish to attend the opening.

The center’s opening coincided with a high-profile dedication ceremony attended by former presidents, first ladies, politicians, celebrities, musicians, and athletes. The event was shared online via a livestream, allowing thousands more to witness the occasion from a nearby park.

The center, located on Chicago’s South Side, near where the Obamas once lived and where Barack Obama began his political career, includes a museum covering their political and personal lives, a Chicago Public Library branch, and recreational facilities. The museum’s design features a tower symbolizing unity and includes excerpts from Obama’s 2015 speech commemorating the Selma-to-Montgomery march, starting with the words ‘You are America.’

Tickets to visit the center are fully booked through November. However, those who attended the opening enjoyed the unique opportunity to meet the Obamas in person.
