At least three tornadoes hit communities outside Chicago on Thursday. These storms leveled homes and brought down trees and power poles, resulting in power outages for hundreds of thousands across the Midwest and Northeast.
In Merrillville, Indiana, roughly 33 miles southeast of Chicago, a significant air column descended, prompting police warnings for residents to seek shelter. By evening, downed trees and lines blocked the streets, homes were damaged, and a section of a high school’s roof was torn off.
Emergency Response and Impact
In Streator, Illinois, a nearby city known for manufacturing and farming, emergency crews responded to tornado damage. A reunification center opened in city hall, and the Red Cross provided a shelter. Mayor Tara Bedei reported no deaths, expressing gratitude for resident safety and emergency personnel’s quick action.
Strong storms also disrupted flights in cities like Chicago, Philadelphia, and New York. The Northeast and mid-Atlantic regions faced extreme heat and humidity.
Midwest Storm Aftermath
Severe storms had moved through the Midwest on Wednesday, knocking out power, damaging buildings, and causing flight cancellations.
In Des Moines, Iowa, a 54-year-old man perished at a homeless camp after being struck by a falling tree during strong storms, according to police. There were no immediate reports of other fatalities or injuries.
Tornado warnings were in effect for Chicago and parts of Indiana and Michigan on Thursday, the National Weather Service reported. A baseball game between the White Sox and the Atlanta Braves was postponed due to rain.
Personal Accounts and Damage
Jennifer Hall, in Elkhart, Indiana, heard a crash as a tree limb pierced her rental home’s roof. She used buckets to catch incoming rainwater. “I’m nervous because it’s been one thing after another,” she said, with her husband away and recovering from surgery.
Shane Tipton from Unionville, Missouri, pulled his 87-year-old dad from harm as a tornado approached. They watched from a truck as it destroyed their home. Rouse described the devastation and their lost dog.
Illinois Damage Report
Springfield, Illinois, residents believed a tornado hit their area late Wednesday. Two buildings at the Animal Protective League shelter sustained heavy damage, yet none of the cats or dogs were injured, reported Deana Corbin, the executive director. The community, including veterinarians and locals, temporarily housed the animals.
There was also damage at Abraham Lincoln Capital Airport in Springfield. Meteorologist Frank Pereira noted that the storm system, driven by cold air from Canada meeting warm, humid Southern air, was moving eastward.
East Coast Weather and Travel Disruptions
The East Coast expected potentially dangerous heat on Thursday and Friday, with possible record high temperatures from the mid-Atlantic to the Northeast, the weather service said. Temperatures could feel like over 100 degrees Fahrenheit with humidity.
Philadelphia declared a heat health emergency, opening cooling centers and conducting outreach. New York City officials urged precautions like drinking water and finding cool shelter.
Ground stops affected airports in Chicago and New York, while Pittsburgh International Airport experienced a power outage from a surge. Over 1,000 flights at Chicago airports were delayed or canceled, FlightAware said. Commonwealth Edison in Illinois reported downed poles and wires, with 80% power restoration expected by late Saturday.
