Lieutenant Ricardo Santos of the New Jersey State Police protected dignitaries in an elite unit. Despite his high-profile role, concerns about his judgment and conduct arose before he was identified as the primary suspect in a double murder-suicide.

Lieutenant Santos worked with New Jersey State Police, earning some scrutiny due to past incidents. On June 22, 2026, information surfaced about him facing questions regarding his behavior.

Dr. Lauren Semanchik, a veterinarian and former partner of Santos, experienced vandalism on her car. She suspected Lieutenant Santos’s involvement due to difficulties following their breakup, according to her report to local police.

An officer contacted Santos about the incident, advising him to avoid contact with Dr. Semanchik to prevent further issues. Santos acknowledged the warning.

On August 1, 2025, a severe tragedy unfolded. Dr. Semanchik and her new boyfriend, Tyler Webb, were shot outside her home in Pittstown, New Jersey. Lieutenant Santos was found dead shortly after, suspected in the double murder, according to prosecutors.

This marked the first instance of an off-duty trooper at the center of such a violent crime in the history of the force, which has been active for over a hundred years. The incident caused shock within the region and raised concerns about the law enforcement community where Santos served for two decades.
