President Donald Trump and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, both Republicans, seem to have overcome previous tensions and are now fostering a renewed alliance. The discord between the two, primarily due to their competition during the 2024 election cycle, appears to have lessened by July 2025. Today, Florida has positioned itself as an advocate of Trump’s administration by endorsing numerous policies.
For instance, Governor DeSantis has shown his support for several initiatives introduced by Trump’s administration. Among these is the “Make America Healthy Again” initiative, spearheaded by Trump’s Department of Health and Human Services. Aligning with this, Florida launched its own “Healthy Florida First” program in January. This state-wide program aims to inspect food products for potential contaminants, a step DeSantis states is aligned with the administration’s objectives.
During a news conference on December 10, 2025, in Orlando, Florida, Governor DeSantis described the “Healthy Florida First” initiative as a program that promotes innovation, accountability, and empowers Floridians to make healthier lifestyle choices. He emphasized the importance of transparency in achieving these goals.
DeSantis further elaborated, mentioning a recent expansion of the initiative, which includes the evaluation of products marketed for children. Collaborating with Florida’s First Lady Casey DeSantis and Surgeon General Dr. Joseph Ladapo, this expansion aims at safeguarding the health of young residents while maintaining a dedication to medical freedom.
The relationship between Trump and DeSantis had soured when DeSantis was considered a potential contender during the 2024 election. Trump criticized DeSantis harshly, which prompted a verbal exchange. However, by 2025, both leaders seemed to reconcile.
In a show of camaraderie during a July 2025 visit to Florida’s Everglades, where they inaugurated an immigration detention center, Trump expressed mutual respect saying, “You’re my friend and you’ll always be my friend.” Although acknowledging possible future disagreements, he alluded to their compatibility and strong bond.
Despite his inability to pursue another gubernatorial term in 2026, DeSantis recently commented on the 2026 midterm elections, expressing concern about potential Democratic strategies if they regain control of the House. In a discussion with conservative commentator Mark Levin, DeSantis speculated that Democrats might attempt to initiate impeachment proceedings against Trump in an effort to hinder his administration’s progress.
