Abelardo De La Espriella, a criminal defense lawyer with no prior experience in politics, is on the verge of a narrow win in Colombia’s presidential election. This outcome could signify a triumph for his supporters, the global right, and President Trump, who has endorsed him.
De La Espriella, known for his transformation from a Miami lawyer to a populist figure donning soccer jerseys and straw hats, secured nearly 49.7% of the votes, according to preliminary results. Iván Cepeda, a leftist senator renowned for his human rights advocacy, garnered approximately 48.7% of the vote, with over 99% of the ballots counted.
Should he win, Colombia would revert to conservative leadership following four years under Gustavo Petro, the nation’s first leftist president. This shift aligns with a broader rightward movement in Latin America during Trump’s second term.
De La Espriella, 47, gained attention with his dynamic campaign, featuring machine-generated flames, A.I. visuals of tigers as his mascot, and fervent anti-Petro chants.
He pledged to “disembowel” the left in Colombia and requested the Trump administration to target his political adversaries. This prompted critics to label him a potential autocrat.
De La Espriella’s platform reflects a growing trend among right-wing leaders in the region. He promised to restore security amidst crime concerns, portray economic recovery from alleged ruin induced by the left, and intensify efforts against corruption.
