An analysis highlights the financial outcomes for investors in a cryptocurrency associated with Donald Trump. Most retail investors experienced losses, whereas strategic traders achieved better outcomes. Almost a million people invested in Trump’s memecoin, suffering cumulative losses of $3.81 billion by the end of June.
The cryptocurrency analytics firm Nansen reported these findings. Donald Trump, however, emerged financially successful. An annual financial disclosure indicated he gained $636 million from his crypto enterprise, contributing to a total profit of at least $2.2 billion in 2025 from all business ventures.
Trump’s financial gains were seemingly inevitable. He profited regardless of the memecoin’s market performance, benefiting from transaction fees as followers traded the tokens. Trump’s Truth Social account was a key platform for promoting these trades.
Political ambitions marked Trump’s initial skepticism towards cryptocurrencies, but he later seized the financial opportunities. In 2024, during his presidential campaign, Trump, with his sons, launched a startup called World Liberty Financial. This startup marketed a cryptocurrency labeled $WLFI, which also plummeted in value.
Just before his inauguration, Trump introduced the $TRUMP memecoin. This novelty currency held little practical value, yet attracted significant investment.
