Austin, TX – President Donald Trump focuses on GOP critics this week, naming Senator John Cornyn of Texas as disloyal while supporting Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton in a contentious runoff election for the GOP Senate nomination.
Trump’s endorsement of Paxton highlights his influence within the Republican Party. This runoff election could affect the GOP’s 53-47 Senate majority. Paxton, a staunch Trump supporter, faces off against Democratic state Rep. James Talarico in the general election. Talarico, known for defeating Rep. Jasmine Crockett in the primary, aims to be the first Democrat to win a Texas Senate election in nearly forty years.
The Senate race is part of broader political contests in Texas, including runoffs for Attorney General and several U.S. House seats. The 35th Congressional District, for example, features a Democratic showdown where one candidate controversially suggests converting an ICE facility to a prison for American Zionists.
Trump criticized Cornyn for his lack of support during Trump’s presidential bids. Despite Cornyn claiming a close relationship with Trump, Paxton alleges Cornyn opposed Trump’s policies, particularly regarding the border wall.
Paxton has been embroiled in various controversies, including being impeached by the Texas House but later acquitted. His personal life and legal troubles continue to shadow his campaign.
Cornyn, backed by Senate Majority Leader John Thune and the National Republican Senatorial Committee, warns that Paxton’s nomination could lead to increased spending to retain the Senate seat and potentially harm down-ballot Republican candidates.
“If placed as the nominee and exposed to general election voters, Paxton could face a difficult time,” stated Cornyn, warning of potential challenges by Democratic candidate Talarico.
Meanwhile, Paxton has redirected his campaign efforts to target Talarico, leveraging his Trump endorsement.
Attorney General candidates, Chip Roy and Mayes Middleton, compete while inexperienced Middleton pours substantial personal funds into his campaign. Roy emphasizes his courtroom experience and commitment to Republican values.
Roy counters Middleton’s accusations regarding Trump’s impeachment, asserting his strong support for Trump’s agenda while criticizing Middleton’s attempts to buy influence.
The winner of the GOP runoff will likely face Democrat Nathan Johnson in the general election. Democratic candidate Joe Jaworski remains in competition after nearly securing the nomination in the primary.
Democratic runoffs in the majority-Latino 35th District have also caused controversies. Candidate Maureen Galindo’s provocative social media remarks about imprisoning Zionists have spurred backlash, influencing support for her rival, Johnny Garcia.
Additional Congressional races feature long-serving Democratic Rep. Al Green against newcomer Christian Menefee in Houston’s 18th District, and candidates Johnson and Allred in Dallas’ 33rd District. Trump’s endorsement of Army veteran Alex Mealer faces opposition from state Rep. Briscoe Cain in the 9th District.
