President Donald Trump has involved himself in multiple election contests this year. By supporting loyalists and sidelining critics, he is positioning allies for the upcoming midterm elections. Recent events suggest he will continue targeting Republicans not aligned with the MAGA movement.
On Tuesday, Republican Representative Thomas Massie from Kentucky’s 4th Congressional District lost his primary election to Ed Gallrein. This defeat followed a contentious campaign marked by a public feud with Trump, who labeled Massie as the “worst congressman in the Republican Party.” Massie had publicly opposed Trump on various matters, including foreign policy and the Epstein files.
Following Massie’s loss, conservative voices began speculating on the next MAGA target. Notably, far-right activist Laura Loomer warned Kentucky Republican Senator Rand Paul: “you’re next.” Paul, aligned politically with Massie, could be a target due to his frequent disagreements with Trump on major issues.
Rand Paul
Rand Paul appears as a likely target given his track record of opposing Trump-backed policies. Paul, known for his libertarian-leaning stance, has repeatedly challenged Trump’s positions on foreign policy and spending.
His opposition includes voting with Democrats to limit U.S. military action in Iran and criticizing Trump’s executive authority, particularly in matters like tariffs and emergency powers. In an interview on a podcast, Paul highlighted the debate over executive power, acknowledging Trump’s increased use of emergency powers and tariffs.
Despite the potential targeting by MAGA figures, Paul remains secure for now. His reelection bid won’t happen until 2028. He maintains a national profile and isn’t pressured by an immediate Trump-backed challenger.
Lauren Boebert
Colorado’s Republican Representative Lauren Boebert, previously supported by Trump, openly backed Massie in his primary race. She traveled to Kentucky, campaigning alongside Massie, amidst praise for his reliability.
In a balanced stance, Boebert reiterated her support for both Massie and Trump. However, Trump threatened her with a primary challenge on his social media platform, Truth Social. Boebert responded, acknowledging the risks she took in supporting Massie, affirming her stance towards America First and MAGA.
Colorado’s congressional primaries are scheduled for June 30, 2026. Currently, Boebert runs unopposed in her district.
Victoria Spartz
Indiana Republican Representative Victoria Spartz expressed support for Massie during his controversial primary fight. Through shared allies and networks, she has maintained a connection with Massie. Prior to his election, Spartz praised Massie for his strong support of women’s rights in Congress.
While Spartz hasn’t received direct criticism from Trump, her positioning with Massie during his period as a targeted figure could attract attention from MAGA figures. Spartz secured her place in the November general election by winning the May 5 Republican primary.
John Thune
Senate Majority Leader John Thune has had numerous policy and strategic disagreements with Trump. Since 2016, Thune called for Trump to withdraw from the presidential race and later opposed attempts to overturn the 2020 election.
Recently, Thune refused to support eliminating the filibuster during a debate on the Trump-backed SAVE America Act, asserting the lack of votes for such action. Despite maintaining a working relationship with Trump, Thune’s candidness when calling out Trump contributes to his position as a frequent MAGA target.
Thune is not facing a ballot in 2026 as his next Senate race isn’t included in this cycle.
