President Donald Trump’s significant influence on Republican politics remains strong, according to Sen. John Kennedy, R-La. On Sunday, he pointed to the president’s endorsement that altered the dynamics of a Louisiana Senate race, leading to the unseating of incumbent Sen. Bill Cassidy.
“Unless you’re God’s perfect idiot, the result was predictable,” Kennedy stated on “The Sunday Briefing.” He noted that polls had shown Senator Cassidy’s vulnerability for over a year, and President Trump’s endorsement of Congresswoman Julia Letlow further sealed the outcome. Although Cassidy was aware of these challenges, he chose to run, and Kennedy respected that decision.
According to The Associated Press, Letlow and Louisiana Treasurer John Fleming emerged ahead of Cassidy in Saturday’s GOP primary. Letlow secured around 45% of the vote, Fleming followed with approximately 28%, and Cassidy placed third with just under 25%. Neither Letlow nor Fleming reached the 50% threshold, leading to a runoff between them. The winner will compete against the Democratic runoff victor in November.
Cassidy, known for voting to convict Trump during his impeachment trial over five years ago, faced criticism from the president. Trump labeled Cassidy “a disloyal disaster” and criticized him harshly on social media.
After Cassidy’s defeat, Trump expressed satisfaction, stating that Cassidy’s political career is “OVER!” During his concession speech, Cassidy took an indirect swipe at Trump, emphasizing respect for election results without making excuses or claims of stolen elections.
Sen. Kennedy acknowledged that Trump’s endorsement played a significant role in Letlow’s success. He also highlighted voter frustration due to recent changes in the primary process. Previously open primaries were altered to closed ones, causing confusion among voters who were limited in their choices. This procedural change, coupled with Trump’s endorsement and Cassidy’s political vulnerabilities, contributed to the election outcome.
