President Donald Trump faced criticism during Wednesday’s examination of the Sports Broadcasting Act. Lawmakers expressed concern over the National Football League’s decision to broadcast games exclusively on streaming services, which has cost fans nearly $1,000 to watch their favorite teams. Amid this discussion, a Democratic representative took the opportunity to criticize Trump unrelatedly after he attended Game 3 of the NBA Finals.
During this hearing, Rep. Jerry Nadler, D-N.Y., suggested Trump’s presence had negatively affected the New York Knicks’ performance. “We cannot discuss anything related to sports today without taking note of the sports story happening in this country today – the New York Knicks’ drive for an NBA championship. Tonight is Game 4, and as long as Donald Trump stays far away from Madison Square Garden, the Knicks should do fine. Let’s go Knicks,” Nadler remarked.
Trump attended Game 3 between the New York Knicks and San Antonio Spurs at Madison Square Garden on June 8, 2026. This made him the first sitting president to attend the NBA Finals. The Knicks had previously won the first two games of the series in San Antonio but lost the home game on Monday.
“NBA is ‘good entertainment’, despite being ‘a little left-wing’,” said Trump after attending the finals.
Despite enthusiastic reactions from the Madison Square Garden crowd, Trump’s visit was accompanied by tight security throughout New York City. Authorities set up a security fence around MSG, and the Secret Service worked diligently, resulting in longer lines and wait times for attendees. The visit also led to the cancellation of watch parties, which will resume for Game 4 on Wednesday.
Since beginning his second term, Trump has attended several sporting events, including the Super Bowl, Daytona 500, college football national championship, the men’s tennis U.S. Open, and the Ryder Cup.
