The atmosphere is tense at CBS’s ’60 Minutes’ following recent leadership changes. Veteran correspondent Scott Pelley has expressed strong disapproval of CBS News head Bari Weiss and the newly appointed executive producer Nick Bilton.
According to a report by the Status website, Pelley voiced his concerns in a meeting with the program’s staff, where he criticized Weiss for her decisions affecting the show. The report revealed that Pelley accused Bilton of having insufficient qualifications for his new role. This meeting highlighted friction within the ’60 Minutes’ team, as it followed the recent dismissal of producer Tanya Simon and correspondents Sharyn Alfonsi and Cecilia Vega.
Status reported that Pelley challenged Bilton, who previously worked as a technology journalist and filmmaker, on his ability to lead without traditional broadcast news experience. Pelley further contended that Weiss’s impact on ‘CBS Evening News’ had been detrimental, questioning her decisions.
Bilton reportedly defended Weiss, stating she is committed to ’60 Minutes’ and its legacy, to which Pelley responded by accusing Weiss of undermining the program. Efforts by CBS leadership to communicate with Pelley privately were rebuffed, and the disagreement became public.
The New York Times commented on the meeting, noting Pelley’s emotional delivery. The newspaper mentioned that an unnamed executive stated Weiss was ready to attend the meeting, but was advised against it.
A New Direction for ’60 Minutes’
This conflict occurs shortly after Weiss released a memo promoting a new strategy for ’60 Minutes.’ She emphasized the importance of expanding the show’s role within CBS News and adapting to contemporary media challenges. According to the memo, this shift aims to preserve the ingenuity and audacity that have long defined ’60 Minutes.’
Pelley’s critical remarks received support from other staff members during the meeting. Bilton, however, remained steadfast, asserting his qualifications and resilience.
