The American flag encountered boos during the opening ceremony of the FIFA World Cup held in Toronto, Canada. On Friday afternoon, when the United States’ flag was presented, fans reacted audibly with disapproval. Earlier, cheers were heard for the Canadian flag.
This reaction followed similar boos heard during the opening ceremony in Mexico on Thursday. In Toronto, during the FIFA Fan Festival, the crowd also jeered the U.S. during a live broadcast from Mexico. The U.S. is one of the three host countries for the tournament, set to take place over several weeks.
Incidents in Toronto
Similar to the event in Mexico, flags of the 48 participating nations were exhibited before the Group B match between Canada and Bosnia and Herzegovina at Toronto Stadium. The flags of Canada and Mexico were applauded, while the U.S. flag drew boos. Michael Bublé performed immediately afterward.
Canada secured their first point of the competition, and on home ground, with a 1-1 draw against Bosnia-Herzegovina.
Reasons Behind the Reaction
The audience’s response may hint at more than just sports rivalry, which often leads to jeers and chants between opposing fans. The lead-up to the 2026 World Cup has been marred by controversies involving the U.S. Actions by President Donald Trump, such as military strikes on Iran, have contributed to tensions. Iran is among the participating teams.
Further dissatisfaction stems from the hosting arrangement. The U.S. will host 78 out of the 104 matches, overshadowing Mexico and Canada’s involvement. Additionally, tensions have risen due to the U.S.’s tariffs, immigration policies, and rumors of Canada potentially becoming the 51st state. These factors have created resentment among fans who feel the tournament is skewed in favor of the U.S.
