4 weeks ago 0

Thousands of adults in the United States deal with depression. Statistics reveal that more than one in four U.S. adults have received a diagnosis. Annually, over 8% of these adults report experiencing a major depressive episode. This results in more than 500,000 hospitalizations for depressive disorders each year.

Representative Thomas Kean Jr., a Republican from New Jersey, recently shared his personal experience with depression. On a Tuesday in Washington, during a speech on the House floor, he disclosed that he had been hospitalized for the condition. Although he didn’t share specifics about the treatment, this announcement highlights the widespread impact of depression.

Kean, who is 57 years old, acknowledged that depression influenced his life for a long time before he recognized its effects. Depression can manifest at various stages in life. Although some people first experience it in middle age or later, the typical onset is younger.

Dr. Mark Rapaport, president of the American Psychiatric Association, emphasizes the importance of recognizing depression as a treatable brain disease. Dr. Rapaport expressed appreciation for Representative Kean’s openness, stressing the necessity of awareness and treatment.

A Safe Environment

Experts point to several reasons why hospitalization for depression may occur. The most common reason involves experiencing suicidal thoughts or self-harm. Recognizing the seriousness of such symptoms can lead to getting the necessary help and support.
