Vallejo Criticized for Comments on Gender and Umpiring at French Open

7 days ago 0

Adolfo Daniel Vallejo expressed dissatisfaction with the officiating during his French Open loss to 17-year-old Moïse Kouame, stating the match should have been overseen by a man. Vallejo, after recovering from two sets behind, ultimately lost the intense second-round match. The tight contest ended 6-3, 7-5, 3-6, 2-6, 7-6(8), amid fervent support for Kouame from the local crowd at Court Suzanne-Lenglen.

The 22-year-old Paraguayan critiqued the selection of umpire Ana Carvalho, questioning her control over the match, particularly Kouame’s perceived stalling tactics during his Grand Slam debut. Vallejo shared his views with Clay magazine, emphasizing the challenges of managing a boisterous audience: “It should be refereed by a man, given the demanding nature of the crowd.” He acknowledged the crowd’s partisanship, conceding that their support for a compatriot was expected.

Vallejo further noted his opponent’s extended delays, which he felt were not adequately addressed. The incident occurred in a match lasting nearly five hours and witnessed by 10,000 spectators, marking a significant moment in Kouame’s young career.

In response, the French Tennis Federation and Roland-Garros organizers issued a statement condemning Vallejo’s remarks. They emphasized gender does not dictate an umpire’s skill, underscoring the importance of professionalism and capability. Vallejo received a fine, and officials reaffirmed their commitment to opposing sexist commentary and supporting all umpires officiating at the tournament.

Prior to the French Open, Vallejo had reached the round of 32 at the Madrid Open and was eliminated in the qualifying round of the Italian Open. Currently ranked 71 in the ATP singles rankings, his French Open journey ended after this controversial match. Meanwhile, Kouame progresses to face Alejandro Tabilo of Chile in the third round.
