Cancer Incidence Rises in Iowa

1 hour ago 0

For years, discussions about cancer in the United States have primarily focused on the “Cancer Alley” in the Deep South or Appalachian states where smoking rates are high. However, Iowa has emerged as a significant point of concern. The state reports the second-highest cancer incidence nationwide and is one of only three states where these rates are increasing.

Fred de Sam Lazaro, a special correspondent, provides insights into this situation. He is the director of the Under-Told Stories Project at the University of St. Thomas, Minnesota. This program integrates international journalism with education. Fred de Sam Lazaro has been with PBS NewsHour since 1985 and regularly contributes as a substitute anchor for PBS’ Religion and Ethics Newsweekly.

Sam Lane, a reporter and producer for PBS NewsHour’s segment unit, continues to explore this growing health issue in Iowa.
