Vice President JD Vance arrived in Switzerland early Sunday to initiate a new round of negotiations with Iran. This move by the Trump administration seeks a durable agreement following a recent ceasefire.
Vance, accompanied by White House envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, aims to solidify discussions with the Iranian delegation, which has also arrived in Switzerland. Talks will take place in Bürgenstock.
Originally planned for Friday, these negotiations were delayed as Switzerland’s foreign ministry postponed discussions involving the U.S., Iran, Qatar, and Pakistan.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi is expected to participate. The talks follow a memorandum of understanding signed by Trump after the G7 summit at the Palace of Versailles. This agreement includes a 60-day ceasefire and outlines a framework for broader talks to end the conflict.
Trump announced on Truth Social that the U.S. might impose tolls in the Strait of Hormuz if a lasting agreement is not reached before the ceasefire expires.
Speaking at Joint Base Andrews, Vance highlighted the importance of establishing a framework for future negotiations with a focus on political leadership and technical teams.
Vance will stay in Switzerland for a couple of days to discuss key issues, including nuclear security and the Lebanon ceasefire. He noted improvements in Lebanon despite intermittent violence between Israel and Hezbollah.
The aim is to prevent further escalation and maintain the ceasefire. The cycle of response to attacks needs to be halted to ensure the ceasefire holds.
Technical-level talks will also involve Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Army Chief Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir.
