Victor Wembanyama, still emotional from the San Antonio Spurs’ Western Conference victory, spoke about his bond with former coach Gregg Popovich. This win secured their place in the NBA Finals against the New York Knicks. Wembanyama emphasized the deep experience and wisdom of Popovich, who is now President of Spurs Basketball, and unofficially known as coach emeritus.
Popovich remains active within the team, attending practices and games, even visiting the locker room to deliver talks after the Spurs’ Game 3 loss to Oklahoma City. Although no longer on the sidelines due to a stroke that ended his coaching career, he continues to influence the team significantly.
“You talk about the greatest coach pretty much of all time to be able to sit here and tell you the experiences that they went through or that he’s been through or that he sees,” said Devin Vassell, Spurs guard.
The anticipation for the Finals is matched by the unique dynamics, as Knicks coach Mike Brown once served as an assistant under Popovich. Brown has ties to San Antonio and jested about saving travel expenses due to family living there.
Brown remarked on Popovich’s enduring influence, both on and off the court. His respect for Popovich and the organization runs deep. Popovich’s presence extends beyond the court, as shown when he met the team at the airport after victories and provided private counsel to Wembanyama following an incident in the semifinals against Minnesota.
Popovich has guided the Spurs to five NBA championships, the first against the Knicks in 1999. As Mitch Johnson leads the team into a new era, he acknowledges Popovich as a valuable mentor.
Preparing for the Finals, Wembanyama eagerly anticipates further guidance from Popovich, whom he affectionately calls “El Jefe.” He recognizes the vital role Popovich’s advice plays in their pursuit of victory.
