The annual parade celebrating Israel took place in New York City on Sunday, featuring an array of notable political figures. However, New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani was not among them. Mayor Mamdani had previously announced his decision to not attend the event.
Leading the parade as grand marshal, city Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch, who is Jewish, expressed her pride in participating. Other political leaders such as Governor Kathy Hochul and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer also attended.
The parade down Fifth Avenue has historically been an event that attracts mayors, governors, and other political leaders. It serves as an opportunity for them to show support for the Jewish state alongside thousands of revelers.
Mayor Mamdani’s Decision
On Thursday, Mamdani reiterated his stance, stating that his views on the Israeli government are clear. “I said on the campaign trail that I wouldn’t be attending the parade,” he noted.
This marks a departure from a longstanding tradition where mayors of New York City participate in the parade.
Response to the Mayor’s Absence
Before the parade, New York Republican gubernatorial candidate Bruce Blakeman criticized Mayor Mamdani, labeling him “anti-Israel.” Blakeman accused Mamdani of denigrating Israel while remaining silent on human rights issues in countries like Iran, Russia, and China.
Blakeman stated, “We don’t want a wolf in sheep’s clothing marching in our parade.”
Public Support and Political Statements
Despite the mayor’s absence, thousands gathered to show their support for Israel. Israeli Ambassador to the United Nations Danny Danon noted the significant turnout, emphasizing the public’s strong connection to Israel.
“Anyone who thinks they can erase Israel or distance the Jewish community from this city saw a clear answer today on the streets of New York,” Danon declared.
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer used the occasion to address the rise of antisemitism. He highlighted how modern technology accelerates the spread of harmful lies against the Jewish people.
“We are seeing an ugly resurgence of antisemitism across the world,” Schumer said before the parade.
