Wyndham Clark Triumphs Amid Fan Jeers at Shinnecock Hills

1 hour ago 0

Wyndham Clark faced a challenging atmosphere at Shinnecock Hills. Fans were not on his side, urging his shots to stray into bunkers and the rough. One particularly vocal spectator was removed after shouting, “Don’t choke, Wyndham!” However, Clark silenced his critics with an impressive 52-foot putt, ensuring his victory in the U.S. Open for the second time in four years. He avoided what could have been a historic collapse, as his six-stroke lead diminished to just one.

The crowd favored other players, notably Scottie Scheffler, who was pursuing a career Grand Slam, and Sam Burns, narrowly defeated by a stroke. Clark’s past actions did not endear him to the fans. They remembered an incident at Oakmont Country Club where he damaged a locker in frustration after missing the cut. His remark on TV during the Masters Par 3 Contest about kids acting as “great birth control” added to the disfavor. Additionally, his 2023 U.S. Open win over popular players Rory McIlroy and Rickie Fowler left some fans cold. Those at Shinnecock Hills sought drama, hoping to see Clark’s lead falter dramatically after each day’s consistency.

“Man, they definitely didn’t want me to win,” Clark remarked. On Saturday, he noted how fans abandoned the course by the end of his round, and on Sunday, their presence was a mixed blessing. It’s uncommon for a leading golfer in a major tournament, or any golfer, to face such intense hostility. A similar situation occurred with McIlroy at the Ryder Cup at Bethpage Black, also on Long Island, but that was a team event with partisan dynamics.

Clark described his mindset, trying to view himself as the “underdog,” reminiscent of his stance in 2023. “I replaced negative comments with positive thoughts,” Clark shared. He acknowledged some responsibility for the fans’ reactions, conceding Scheffler was a worthy rival aiming for a rare Grand Slam achievement. The tension affected Clark early in the round, causing bogeys on several holes as cheers greeted Scheffler’s efforts. Fans celebrated Scheffler’s birthday with warmth, contrasting the taunts aimed at Clark.

Scheffler also commented on the crowd’s intensity. “You enjoy support, but when balls miss greens and cheers erupt, it’s overwhelming,” he observed. Clark faced jeers when shots misfired, like landing a shot under trash containers or into bunkers.

Despite the criticism, Clark managed a moment of triumph on the 16th hole with a 24-foot birdie putt, extending his lead temporarily. Yet, the crowd resumed its heckling shortly after. On the 18th tee, a fan mockingly sang “Under Pressure,” highlighting the strain Clark faced.

Clark reflected on the challenging day, stating, “It was tough, but I’m proud I persevered. Things could have gone wrong, but I held strong. Winning is what matters, regardless of the margin.”
