The International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) has prohibited refillable water bottles at World Cup stadiums. This new regulation is part of a comprehensive list of banned items for the 2026 tournament.
The ruling represents a departure from previous World Cups where sometimes sealed drinks were permitted. The ban will be enforced at all host venues in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
Organizers explain that the restriction is intended to enhance safety and expedite security checks. However, this measure is expected to affect fans significantly. Supporters will need to rely on stadium vendors for beverages. This could lead to concerns about pricing and availability, especially during matches held in high temperatures.
A FIFA spokesperson stated, “FIFA is committed to protecting the health and safety of all players, referees, fans, volunteers, and staff. This decision to prohibit bottles is aimed at preventing risk and injury to both players and attendees.”
Water bottles are among many items now deemed prohibited, including containers and large bags, as FIFA tightens regulations for the expanded tournament.
