Medicare and Medicaid Fraud Under Scrutiny

1 day ago 0

The programs of Medicare and Medicaid are structured as open-ended entitlements. This framework presents challenges in distinguishing between outright scams and aggressive yet routine billing practices.

On June 4, 2026, at 2:51 p.m. EDT, U.S. Administrator for the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, Mehmet Oz, addressed the issue of fraud during a press conference. Vice President JD Vance attended the event, held on May 13, 2026, to discuss new ‘anti-fraud initiatives.’

The Trump administration has recognized the significant problem of fraud within Medicare and Medicaid. Administrator Mehmet Oz stated that the federal government is committed to confronting healthcare fraudsters to safeguard American families and patients.

He reported an alarming estimate of $100 billion in annual fraud occurring within the Medicaid program. A recent crackdown by his agency led to the shutdown of 800 hospice facilities in Los Angeles. These entities received $1.4 billion for services that were allegedly fraudulent last year.
