Power Ballad Film Review

2 hours ago 0

The trailer for Lionsgate’s “Power Ballad” features Paul Rudd and Nick Jonas in a fresh music dramedy. Directed by John Carney, this film explores the lives of two musicians who once basked in the spotlight.

Paul Rudd stars as Rick Power, an American wedding singer living in Ireland, who reflects on his past life as the frontman of a rock band. After marrying an Irish woman and raising his daughter, he’s left with a longing for his previous rock star days. When Rick attempts to play an old hit, his drummer reminds him of the difference between their current lives and their former glory days.

The band, The Bride and Groove, performs at a wedding, where a guest named Danny Wilson, played by Nick Jonas, catches their eye. Danny, a former boy band member whose solo career has lagged behind his bandmates, connects with Rick. They both share the struggle of coping with fading stardom.

Their mutual understanding leads to a spontaneous jam session, where they exchange musical tips. Danny is especially impressed by Rick’s unfinished track, “How to Write a Song Without You.” Returning to Los Angeles, Danny presents his work to his manager, Mac, portrayed by Jack Reynor. Yet, Mac dismisses Danny’s tracks as potential hits and threatens his lifestyle if he cannot deliver a chart-topper.

Weeks later, Rick hears a familiar tune, now a hit single by Danny, while at a mall. This sparks a contentious music battle, as Rick strives to claim credit for the song that revived Danny’s career, despite lacking evidence. The conflict causes turmoil in Rick’s personal and professional life.

Rudd and Jonas deliver strong performances. Beth Fallon appears as Rick’s teenage daughter, Aja, adding a lively presence. Carney, renowned for intertwining music in his films, does not quite reach the acclaim of his earlier works such as “Once” or “Sing Street.” “Power Ballad,” while not his finest, remains enjoyable. Despite a slightly wandering final act, it ends on a high note, earning audience applause.

In summary, “Power Ballad” delivers laughs and impressive music but does not quite reach Carney’s best. However, with Rudd and Jonas in the lead, it crafts an entertaining experience.

Rating: ★★★ Stream it later. “Power Ballad” is rated R for language and some drug use. Running time is 1 hour and 38 minutes. It is currently showing in theaters.
