Victor Wembanyama played a significant role during Game 2 of the NBA Finals, almost helping the San Antonio Spurs level the series with the New York Knicks. A crucial error near the game’s end and a missed shot, however, have marked his performance.
The game featured thrilling moments, with both teams holding double-digit leads. Notably, the Spurs mounted an exciting comeback in the fourth quarter to catch up and take a lead. Yet, a foul on a three-point shot proved costly. Following this, Wembanyama attempted a pass to Stephon Castle with only 12 seconds left. His pass unfortunately hit Castle’s back as he moved up the court. This mishap allowed Jalen Brunson to seize the ball, leading to Wembanyama fouling him. When Brunson missed one of his free throws, the Spurs had a chance for a one-point victory on home ground.
However, the final play called by Mitch Johnson lacked clarity. The ball ended up with Wembanyama, who tried a game-winning shot. Sadly, he missed it just before the buzzer sounded. The loss pushed the Spurs to a 0-2 hole, and Wembanyama, only 22, faces wide criticism for his endgame decisions.
Fans on social media platform X expressed their dissatisfaction, highlighting Wembanyama’s poor pass and general lack of aggressiveness. Comments included, “What a stupid turnover by Wemby to cost them the game,” and frustration over his missed opportunities. Another remarked, “Wemby folded twice at the end of the game.”
Onlookers suggested better strategies, debating why Wembanyama settled for a jumper, arguing for a drive with Harper or Castle instead. Criticism also noted his perceived lack of a “clutch gene” and labeled his and Castle’s mistakes as potentially championship-costing.
The miscommunication showed the inexperience of the young Spurs in such high-pressure situations. Game 3, likely a must-win for San Antonio, will unfold at the challenging venue of Madison Square Garden. The Knicks will have fan support significantly outweighing that of the Spurs’ fans. The game is set for Monday at 8:30 p.m. ET, broadcasted on ABC and ESPN.
