Trump’s UFC Event on White House Lawn Faces Challenges

2 weeks ago 0

Event Preparation and Cost

President Donald Trump’s plan to host a UFC fight on the White House’s South Lawn has involved extensive coordination. Over seven federal agencies and hundreds of staff have contributed to the planning and execution. The preparations have cost upwards of $60 million, as shown in a recent legal filing. The funding sources include the UFC and affiliated groups. This event is a part of America’s 250th anniversary celebrations, featuring seven mixed martial arts matches set for Sunday.

Legal Challenge

A legal challenge complicates the event. Two Virginia residents have filed a federal lawsuit against the National Park Service, aiming to stop the proceedings. The agency oversees the South Lawn and filed a response to this request in court. The document highlighted the significant investment, noting “well over $60 million and tens of thousands of hours of labor” have already been committed.

The Octagon and Event Setup

The focal point is the Octagon, an eight-sided cage for the matches. It will sit at the center of the specially constructed arena, accommodating 4,000 spectators. An additional 120,000 visitors, with tickets obtained through an online lottery, will watch from the nearby Ellipse.

The installation began on May 20. The Secret Service coordinated with the UFC to inspect daily arrivals of 20 to 30 trucks and oversee 700 to 900 staff involved in the setup. Although the exact government resource allocation remains unspecified, seven agencies, including Homeland Security and the FAA, have dedicated significant resources to the project.

Weekend Schedule

Festivities start Saturday with a ceremonial weigh-in at the Ellipse, followed by a concert by The Zac Brown Band. Throughout the weekend, the UFC Freedom 250 Fan Fest will offer interactive experiences, live shows, celebrity appearances, athlete meet-and-greets, and live music. The seven fight bouts will occur Sunday night, after which Trump will travel to France for the G7 summit. Dismantling of the event setup will begin immediately afterward, expected to complete by June 23.

Athletes’ Preparations

Fourteen athletes will compete, following rigorous training regimes. Preparations begin months in advance, with intensified focus on weight cutting and diet in the final week. This involves fasting, extreme sauna sessions, and hot Epsom salt baths, allowing competitors to lose up to 20 pounds for weigh-ins. The purpose is to ensure fair competition among similarly weighted fighters.

Lawsuit Details

The lawsuit, filed by the Public Integrity Project on behalf of the Virginia residents, argues the event violates National Park Service regulations prohibiting sporting events on federal parklands. Attorney Brendan Ballou labeled it as a “corrupt use of our most sacred national monuments for private gain.” The National Park Service disputes this claim and detailed their extensive preparations as a rebuttal. Their position is that the challenge threatens to dismantle extensive efforts and disappoint a large audience.
