On February 4, 2026, a courageous 13-year-old Australian boy named Austin Appelbee shared his harrowing experience of swimming alone in the ocean for four hours without a life jacket to summon help for his family. Austin, who found himself in this perilous situation while on a beach outing with his family, told Australia’s ABC News, “I just said, ‘Not today, not today, not today. I have to keep on going.'”
Austin’s journey began on January 30 when he, his mother Joanne Appelbee, and his two younger siblings enjoyed a beach trip. Equipped with a kayak and two inflatable stand-up paddleboards, the family initially planned to stay in the water for just an hour. However, the family’s adventure took an unexpected turn when the calm ocean turned tumultuous, causing their kayak to flip and start taking on water.
Joanne Appelbee praised her son Austin for his life-saving actions during the ordeal. She explained that she initially attempted to tow both paddleboards and her younger children but then made the decision to send Austin ahead to get help when the kayak began to fill with water. Joanne recounted her emotions, saying, “In the beginning, it was, ‘We’re going to be fine and Austin is going to make it back.’ As time went on, I was like, ‘Why haven’t I seen anyone come?'”
The Australian Maritime Safety Authority captured camera footage of a rescue boat coming to the Appelbee family’s aid. Austin, who began learning to swim at the tender age of four, maintained focus on positive thoughts, including memories of his family, friends, and his beloved Thomas the Tank Engine character. This mindset powered him through the daunting task.
Initially setting off with the kayak, Austin realized he was better off without it as he battled through waves and abandoned it to continue alone. “And then finally, I just made it to shore. I just collapsed,” he recalled.
After reaching the shore, Austin still had the challenge of running another mile along the beach to retrieve his family’s phone and alert emergency services. His mother expressed her overwhelming pride, stating, “He’s absolutely amazing. Me and his dad are super proud.” The Australian Maritime Safety Authority swiftly responded and later released the footage of their rescue mission.
