Court Orders Trump’s Name Removed from Kennedy Center

5 days ago 0

In Washington, a legal dispute has erupted over former President Donald Trump’s name being added to the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. A court has ruled that Trump’s name was added illegally, and he is facing a deadline to have it removed.

Legal Battle and Court Ruling

On May 29, U.S. District Judge Christopher Cooper decided that only Congress could make changes to the Kennedy Center’s name. He ordered that all references to Trump be removed by Friday. A person familiar with the situation, who wished to remain anonymous, noted that the Kennedy Center board filed a formal request to delay this ruling late Thursday.

Judge Cooper also stopped the Trump administration from shutting down the venue for extensive renovations planned for July, which were to last two years.

Board’s Moves and Reactions

The Kennedy Center’s board previously sent a memo to employees to ensure all correspondence used the official name without Trump’s addition. The venue’s website has removed Trump’s name, and ticket offers for upcoming events now reflect the original title.

In response to the last-minute legal moves by the board to preserve Trump’s name, legal representatives, including Norm Eisen, assert that these actions are doomed to fail. They are acting on behalf of Congresswoman Joyce Beatty, who sued to eliminate Trump’s name from the center.

Impact and Changes at Kennedy Center

While previously overlooking the Kennedy Center in his first term, Trump has shown substantial interest since his return to office. He reorganized the venue’s leadership, replacing them with his chosen board. Notably, Trump’s influence altered the programming to align more closely with his interests.

This led to significant outcry within the arts community. Artists like Issa Rae and Bela Fleck withdrew from events, and several consultants resigned. Jean Davidson, the executive director of the National Symphony Orchestra, also departed for a new position in Los Angeles.

On Thursday, the board also passed a resolution that praised Trump’s dedication to the Kennedy Center as an important American institution.
